FAQ
Got questions?
PNG supports transparency (alpha channel) while JPG does not. If your HEIC photo contains transparent areas — such as iPhone screenshots with transparent backgrounds — PNG preserves them faithfully. JPG would fill those areas with white.
iPhone Live Photos contain a .mov video component in addition to the static image. This converter processes only the static image component of the HEIC file. The Live Photo video is not included in the resulting PNG.
PNG uses lossless compression, so files are usually larger than HEIC. A 3 MB HEIC photo may result in an 8-15 MB PNG depending on content. If size is a priority and you don't need transparency, consider converting to JPG instead.
Safari on macOS and iOS decodes HEIC natively. Modern Chrome and Edge also support HEIC thanks to recent updates. If the converter doesn't process your file, try Safari or update your browser to the latest version.
Choose PNG when you need transparency (screenshots with transparent backgrounds, images to overlay in designs), when you plan to re-compress in an editor (PNG has no cumulative quality loss), or when working with text and illustrations where JPG creates visible artifacts.
HEIC to PNG: preserving the alpha channel from your iPhone photos
HEIC (High Efficiency Image Container) is Apple's default photo format since iOS 11. Unlike JPG, HEIC can store images with an alpha channel — meaning with transparency. iPhone screenshots frequently contain transparent areas, especially when exported from apps that support transparent backgrounds. Converting to PNG preserves that alpha channel completely.
PNG (Portable Network Graphics) was designed in 1996 as a patent-free alternative to GIF, and unlike JPG, it uses lossless compression. This makes it ideal for graphic design, logos, screenshots, and images that will be edited later. PNG's transparency support makes it the natural target format when visual fidelity is the priority.
Convertir.ai processes the HEIC to PNG conversion directly in your browser using native image decoding APIs. Your photo is never uploaded to any server. This is especially important for personal or work photographs that should not leave your device.
