Yes. You can define the starting number of the pagination. For example, if your document is chapter 3 of a book starting at page 47, you can set the starting number to 47.

Yes. There is an option to skip the first page, so visible numbering starts on the second page. The cover will not show a number even though it is counted internally.

You can use standard Arabic numerals (1, 2, 3), lowercase Roman numerals (i, ii, iii), or uppercase (I, II, III). You can also add extra text like 'Page 1 of 10'.

The tool uses a standard font (Helvetica) to ensure compatibility with all PDF viewers. Advanced font customization would require more complete PDF editing software.

Numbers added by this tool are an additional layer on top of existing content. If the document already has printed numbers, both will appear. To replace existing numbers, you would first need to remove the originals with a PDF editor.

PDF page numbers: how to add pagination to a document

PDF documents generated from different sources — Word exports, database reports, converted presentations — frequently lack visible numbering. For documents that will be printed, bound, or presented in formal meetings, page numbering is essential so readers can cross-reference.

Adding page numbers to a PDF involves overlaying text at a fixed position on each page (typically footer or header). In the PDF structure, this is implemented as an annotation or as content in each page's content stream. The position, size, and style of the number are defined at generation time.

Convertir.ai adds numbering directly in your browser using pdf-lib. No data is transmitted to external servers. This is especially important for confidential documents like contracts, financial reports, or academic theses that need pagination before official submission.
